According to City of Middletown police, the crash occurred around 11:10 p.m. on West Main Street when the unidentified man lost control of his 1999 Mazda Miata convertible, crossed over into the southbound lane and struck a number of trees and a telephone pole, said the City of Middletown Police.
The impact of the crash then caused the Mazda to roll over and a hit a 2014 Chevy Equinox head on, ejecting the Mazda's driver into the roadway, police said.
Based on an initial investigation, police said speed seemed to be a "significant" contributing factor in causing the driver to lose control of the vehicle.
The driver of the Equinox was not injured and is cooperating with the investigation, police said.
Police are awaiting autopsy and toxicology report results. An investigation is continuing.
